One worker was killed and another was injured after a load of steel beams fell from a crane Tuesday morning at a construction site in Evanston, authorities said.

Shorty before 8:30 a.m., Evanston firefighters responded to the construction site at 811 Emerson St., where they found a 27-year-old man pinned under the beams and a 55-year-old man gravely injured, officials said.

Both men were taken to Evanston Hospital, where the 55-year-old victim was pronounced dead, according to a news release from the Evanston Fire Department. His name was not released.

The younger man was listed in critical condition.

The accident occurred when the crane’s rigging failed while unloading stabilization columns from the back of a truck and the columns dropped from a height of about 30 feet, according to the news release.

Firefighters also had to help the crane operator down from the control room at the top of the crane.

“He was just really shaken, after something like that,” said Evanston Fire Department Division Chief Paul Polep. “We just went up there to assist him getting down, which I think he was really grateful for.”

Investigators from the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration were on the scene. The cause of the accident was still under investigation.
